Inside every Drowsie
Meet DrOS, the brain that runs it all.
You press play and fall asleep. DrOS runs the rest of the night, and learns which sounds settle you, night by night.
One real night
You fall asleep. DrOS takes it from there.
This night is real, exactly as the app showed it the next morning. Every decision on it was made by DrOS, with nobody touching the phone.

9:21 pm
It plays what settles you
At bedtime DrOS starts last night’s opening sound, your own pick, or its best pick for you. This night opened with Sitar Dreams.
Asleep
It fades once you’ve settled
Asleep in 7 minutes. Once you’ve been mostly still for about 30 minutes, the sound fades out over about a minute, so it isn’t playing all night.
2:59 am
It plays again as you start to wake
The pillow picked up the start of a wake, and within about half a minute DrOS faded in Box Fan. Sleep came back right away, and the sound faded out again at 3:24 am.
Morning
It wakes you gently
Set a time in the app. In the half hour before it, DrOS watches for a moment you’re already moving, and wakes you then from under your pillow, or at your set time at the latest.
And on its own, DrOS also:
- Picks up your last volume
- Steps aside if another app starts playing
- Plays for 3 hours a night at most
- Ends the night on its own when you get up in the morning
Night by night
It learns which sounds settle you.
Every night is a small test. DrOS notes how quickly you settle after each sound, and compares it with your own nights and wakes without one.
So some wakes it leaves quiet on purpose, more often in the first few weeks. That is how it can tell what a sound is really doing for you.
Night by night it leans toward what works, and still tries something new now and then, in case something works better.
It learns on your phone, from your own nights, using a Bayesian learning method. Yours, not an average of strangers.

Questions
About DrOS and the app.
Do I need the app?
Not to play sound: without the app, Drowsie plays anything from any phone over Bluetooth. DrOS, the Sleep tab, the gentle alarm and Partner Mode all run through the Drowsie app.
Does my phone need to stay nearby?
Yes, keep it in the bedroom. DrOS runs on your phone and talks to Drowsie over Bluetooth all night. Without the phone nearby, Drowsie still plays what the phone sends it, but DrOS can’t run or read the night.
What does each part do?
Drowsie reads your movement, breathing and heart rate through the pillow, and plays the sound. Your phone runs DrOS: every decision, and the learning. Your account keeps your nights and what DrOS has learned, and builds your Sleep tab.
How does DrOS learn what settles me?
By comparing: how quickly you settle after a sound, against your own nights and wakes without one. That’s why some wakes are left quiet on purpose. It learns on your phone, just for you, using a Bayesian learning method.
Can my partner use it too?
Yes, with a Drowsie each. Link your two accounts, and Partner Mode shows how your nights affect each other. It works on iPhone and Android.
Which phones does it work with?
iPhone with iOS 17 or later, and Android 8 or later.
Is Drowsie mine to keep?
Yes. Drowsie is yours, and it always plays anything from any phone over Bluetooth.
How long does the battery last?
Four or more nights on a charge. It charges with the USB-C cable in the box.
